Richard McMahon MAICD is a precision micro-mechanical engineer with more than 35 years of experience spanning Defence, aerospace, scientific instrumentation, MedTech and advanced prototyping.
His career has consistently focused on the development, manufacture and troubleshooting of high-precision mechanical and electromechanical systems, including work aligned with Defence and other high-consequence engineering environments where performance, reliability and sound engineering judgement are critical.
Richard’s technical foundation is in micro-machining and watchmaking — disciplines that historically underpinned the manufacture and maintenance of aircraft instrumentation, medical devices, timing systems and military equipment. This background provides a rare combination of extreme precision capability, clean assembly methodology, advanced fault-finding and practical mechanical judgement that is directly applicable to modern electromechanical subsystem development.
He has worked across Australia and Europe in micro-machining, consulting and product development, supporting universities, government agencies, start-ups and private engineering organisations with micron-tolerance components, prototype systems and complex device troubleshooting.
Over time, Richard’s work has evolved from precision component manufacture into full design-to-manufacture delivery, with particular emphasis on early-stage prototyping, rapid iteration and subsystem development under technical uncertainty. His capability spans precision machining, assembly, validation, troubleshooting and system-level problem solving, enabling the direct translation of concepts into functional prototypes and manufacturable systems.
At McMahon Micro, Richard leads a vertically integrated engineering environment that provides tight control over design, Lean-informed manufacture, assembly and validation. This allows technical problems to be identified and resolved rapidly, with prototype and development iteration cycles often measured in hours or days rather than weeks.
A key point of difference is Richard’s active involvement across South Australia’s Defence, advanced manufacturing, research and innovation ecosystem.
He serves as a South Australian Chapter Councillor with the Australian Industry & Defence Network (AIDN), contributing an SME and advanced-manufacturing perspective to industry engagement, sovereign capability development and the broader Defence industry discussion.
Richard is also an External Technical Expert with the Future Industries Institute at Adelaide University, providing an industry perspective into research, technology development, prototyping and the practical transition from concept to manufacturable product.
McMahon Micro maintains an office at Lot Fourteen in Adelaide, placing the company within one of Australia’s leading Defence, space, technology and innovation precincts and providing direct engagement with the broader South Australian aerospace, space, research and advanced-technology community.
Richard is also an annual guest speaker on prototype development at the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) Microengineering Winter School, contributing alongside specialists from organisations including NASA, DSTG and the Medical Device Partnering Program. He continues to contribute to university-led, research and early-stage technology development programs where practical engineering, prototype development and manufacturing expertise are required.
